Math(s) HOMEWORK HELP? pleeeeeaaaassseee ^___^?

An ordinary pack of cards is shuffled and you choose a card at random.

Give the probability that the card is :

a) red

b) a heart

c) a 3

d) a court card - jack, queen or king

e) not a court card

f) an even number

g) a number less than 6 - assuming an ace is higher than a 6

h) an ace

i) the ace of spades

give your answers as fractions in their lowest terms.

(probabilities are always between 0 and 1, so they're sometimes given as fractions and sometiems as decimals.

THANK YOU!

a)50% or 26/52

b)13/52 or 25%

c) 4/52 or 7.69%

d)12/52 or 23.08%

e)40/52 or 76.92%

f) 40/52 or 76.92%

g)16/52 or 30.77%

h)4/52 or 7.69%

i)1/52 or 1.9%
Reply:just look at a standard deck to find your answers:

half the cards are red, half are black

one fourth are any given suit

and so forth
Reply:Probabilities are calculated by taking the number of possible outcomes that you want divided by the total number of cards or total possible outcomes.

There are 52 cards, so this will always be the total number of possibilites (unless you cheat or have a short deck). This number will always be in the denominator (the bottom of the fraction).

Now just count the number of possiblities of things you want and put that in the numerator (top of the fraction).

a) Half the cards are black and half are red (26 possibilities), so the fraction is 26/52 = 1/2. This could also be stated as "1 out of 2".

b) There are 13 hearts in a deck, so the probability is 13/52 = 1/4.

c) There are four 3's in a deck, so 4/52 = 1/13.

d) There are four each J, Q, K or 12 total, so 12/52 = 3/13.

e) The non-court cards (we call them face cards) are 52 - 12 = 40, so 40/52 = 10/13. Notice that d + e = 1. Whenever you have what are called mutually exclusive conditions and you add them together, the total is 1 or 100%. (This may be useful later in your mathmatics career).

f) Half the cards are even, so 1/2 or if you don't count court cards, 40 ÷ 2 = 20 even number cards, so 20/52 = 5/13.

g) The numbers less than a 6 are 5,4,3,2 (not counting A), and there are 4 each. There are 4 numbers and 4 suits, so 4 x 4 = 16. The probability is 16/52 = 4/13.

h) This question is just like letter (c). There are 4 aces, so 4/52 = 1/13.

i) There is only 1 ace of spades, so 1/52.
