Why do I associate letters or numbers with various events or acts?

Sometimes when I am doing something I'll suddenly associate a random letter or number with it. Then the only thing I can think of for the duration of that act is that letter or number.

It also doesn't always happen...just some things, but not most.

So, say i'm washing the dishes. I'll suddenly think "M" or "This feels like M". Then for as long as I wash the dishes all I can think of is "M". But sometimes it will be J...or C...ect.

Rarely I notice it and I think "Why am I associating M with dishes?" but I can never think of a reason. For some reason, just doing that thing makes me think of M.

When I'm done the association instantly fades, and it's almost like it never happened. If I think about that act, say washing the dishes, I don't think of M anymore...it only occurs during the act.

Any idea why this happens?

(M and dishes is just a random example).

Why do I associate letters or numbers with various events or acts?
different people have different ways of remembering or associating things with.like some people associate things/places/events with a smell.some people associate it with words some with numbers(like you),some people associate with colours.its just a state of mind which helps you remember things better sometimes.some people say its to do with your senses as well.like for people who associate with smell may have a very strong sense of smell.some who associate with colour have a strong sense of sight.some who associate with words/numbers have a strong intelligence.it goes on that way.and this is normal for a lot of different people but they have different ways of associating things with.not only letters.
Reply:The only thing I've head of that sounds even remotely similar is synesthesia. Why don't you look it up, and read about it some more. Its possible you could have something like it?? You could enter your question on google too. Hope I could help!
Reply:Sounds like OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder. In some way or form.
